Walter Rodney Mitchum, 75 beloved partner of Donna Lee Lyon, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away on May 9, 2025.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 2PM at Avinger Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Eutawville Cemetery, Hwy. 6, Eutawville.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Rodney's son-in-law David Martin, his grandsons, Bobby Miller, and DeRossie DeLaigle, III. Honorary pallbearers will be DeRossie DeLaigle, II and Rhett Riviere.
Rodney was devoted to Donna, daughter Kendall (David) Martin, four grandchildren, and his elder sister, Iris. Any time Rodney spent time with his family was special! Even as a child Rodney never met a stranger. This personality contributed to his successful career as a salesman, specializing in the technique of concrete mix design. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years he graduated from Morehead State University, earning a B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry. From the early age of about four, Rodney began his lifelong passion for horses. He was truly an expert horseman and was breaking horses by the early age of 12 to earn pocket money. Horses were his main hobby all of his life. He was proud of the fact that he treated horses with kindness and respect, never being harsh when training them. In his later years he rescued horses that were being abused. One of his rescues was a horse that was so starved and weakened he could not get them into his horse trailer. Eventually he took the horse to his home, and it took several years of special care to bring the horse back to good health.
Rodney was born on August 24,1949 at home with a mid-wife assisting in rural Eutawville. He was the son of the late Wilma "Bill" and Everett Mitchum.
Rodney is survived by a daughter Kendall (David) Martin; grandsons Reid, Parker, and Briggs; granddaughter Charley; sister Iris; a niece and four nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Robert and Bill.
