It was Jack who inspired and convinced me to earn the credits necessary for my teaching certification while he was my boss at Horizon House, a residential facility for troubled teens. That was a challenging environment in which to work, but the next position Jack held was even more so as the principal at Ferris School for Boys, a maximum security prison. He was instrumental in helping me to secure a teaching position there, one I held for many years until my retirement.
In all the years I worked with Jack in both of those facilities, I never heard him raise his voice in anger or chastise a student -- he regarded every encounter with our students as a "teaching moment". I was grateful for Jack's wisdom and strength which helped me to become a better teacher. I will deeply miss my mentor and friend. Thank you, Jack, for playing a major role in my life.

Jack and I met working at Division of Youth Rehabilitative Services-Ferris School where he was the School Principal and I was a clinical psychologist. The education department improved dramatically during his tenure there. He was very well-liked by students and staff. Students were astonished by his skill on the basketball court going undefeated in 1 on 1 games as far as I know. We remained close friends since that time. He helped move me into my first house in 1991 and I returned the favor a few years later. He was a family man through and through. It was really something to watch him speak of Diane and the kids. His commitment to Catholicism and providing a Catholic education to young people resulted in his founding Aquinas Academy- a genuine labor of life-deeply appreciated by students, teachers, and staff. On a humorous note, we were both surprised to learn we actually read papal encyclicals. That said, Jack was no "holy-roller". He was fun and funny with a great sense of humor and colorful language in the company of men. Jack was one of my closest friends and easily one of the best men I've ever known. Agus mé i mo sheasamh ar an mbóthar nó ar na cosáin liath,
Cloisim é i gcroílár an domhain mhóir."
