John S. Murphy, affectionately known as "Jack," passed away on October 5, 2024, in Terry, Mississippi, at the age of 98. Born on December 14, 1925, in Philadelphia, Mississippi to Lagaston Murphy and Jessie Nellie Smith Murphy. Jack’s life was characterized by hard work, dedication, and a love for his family.
As a skilled truck driver and an "Ace" mechanic, Jack devoted many years to his passions, earning the respect of his colleagues and customers alike. His meticulous work ethic and attention to detail made him a standout in his field.
A proud veteran, he served in the United States Navy, embodying the spirit of service before self. Jack was also known for his passion for collecting and trading cars, a hobby that showcased his hands-on expertise and love for automobiles. Furthermore, he had a fondness for Western films, particularly the acclaimed series "Gunsmoke."
Jack's family was the cornerstone of his life. He cherished every moment spent with them, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Danny Murphy (Linda) of Terry and Billy Murphy of Crystal Springs; and a daughter, Becky Griffing (Eddy) of Crawford. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his grandchildren, Eddy Griffing Jr. of Byram, Patricia Smith (Randall) of Florence, Heather Vaughn (Mitchell) of Brandon, Danny Murphy Jr. (Ashley) of Dallas, TX, Danielle Bryant (James) of Sebring, FL, and Kristi Duran (Emmett) of Flora. His great-grandchildren, Cody, Alexis, Shania, Shane, Koby, Clay, and Chloe, were a source of immense pride and joy for him. Additionally, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Martha Murphy, numerous nephews, nieces, and many other beloved family members and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 41 years, Hilda Murphy, who he cherished throughout their life together. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Clearman Murphy and James Murphy, a sister, Charlotte Lundy, and grandson, Jesse Griffing.
A visitation will be held on October 9, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Chancellor Funeral Home Byram, located at 7225 S Siwell Rd, Byram, MS 39272. This will be followed by a funeral service at the same location, beginning at 2:00 PM.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Jack's hospice healthcare team; Caroline, John, Matt, Leslie, and Linda.
