John Arvid Nelson, a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, in Great Falls, Montana, at the age of 96. Born on December 27, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, John led a life deeply rooted in faith, creativity, and love for his family. John was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Marjorie.

John's journey in art began in his hometown, where he excelled at the Art Institute of Chicago. His early career saw him apprenticing at one of Chicago's finest art studios. His talent and dedication were further recognized during his service in the Army, where he contributed as an artist in the psychological warfare unit. On November 17, 1951, John married Marjorie in Chicago, Illinois, and together they built a life filled with love and adventure, residing in various cities including Chicago, La Crosse, Wisconsin, White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and Savannah, Georgia.

A man of profound faith, John's religious beliefs were integral to his life. He was deeply involved in his church, where his series of paintings depicting the life of Christ were cherished and displayed. These works also gained international acclaim, featured in calendars for over two decades. John's career in art was diverse and impactful. He worked in industrial and advertising art, and illustrated books on American historical figures and sports. He also contributed to the Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks.

One of John's notable achievements was his participation in NASA's art program, "The Artist and the Space Shuttle," where his painting "Space Visitor" became part of NASA's permanent art collection. This piece toured Europe, showcasing his unique perspective and artistic talent. In addition to his work with NASA, John was celebrated for his wildlife paintings and his beautiful landscapes of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana and Savannah.

John's legacy is carried on by his children, Linda (Alan) Marquardt, Thomas (Diane) Nelson, and Steven (Kris) Nelson; his grandchildren, David (Natalie) Marquardt, Megan (Andy) Marquardt-Ray, Brandon Nelson, Taylor Nelson, Mallory (Brendan) Current, Nick (Grace) Nelson, Ari (Rob) Noland, Haley (Joe) Franta; and his great-grandchildren, Giada Marquardt, Logan Ray, Elin, Axel, and Willa Current, Charli, Nellie and Bennett Noland, Hazel and Maxwell Nelson, and Hudson, Henry and Jack Franta.

John was known for his kindness and consideration towards others, qualities that endeared him to all who knew him. His life was a testament to his dedication to his faith, family, and art, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration. His family and friends will dearly miss him but find comfort in the indelible mark he has left on their lives.
