John E Ortego, 80 years of age, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026. John was born on January 30, 1945 in
Ville Platte, Louisiana to the late Edward and Emelia Ortego. He was the youngest of four children, Ruth McDaniel, James Ortego, and the late Bonnie Ortego.
John was a devoted husband to his wife, Joyce Pellettieri Ortego for nearly 60 years. He was survived by three children, Jennifer Ortego Bird (Michael), John M Ortego, and Joseph Ortego (Jill). He was a proud grandfather to Olivia Bird, Justin Ortego (Anna), Cody Ortego, Shelby Cazes (Drew), Ortego, Hannah Almendarez, Rhett Ortego and great grandfather to Avery and Colton Cazes.
John was a kind hearted man a few words, steady to the core, and dependable in a world that often isn't. Family always came first, and he had a knack for putting life into perspective for his three children. He was a genuine man and enjoyed helping others. John was unintentionally funny at times, the kind of person whose humor caught you off guard and kept you laughing. He found joy in life's pleasures: Boats, cats, old country, music, buffets and a good belt buckle.
John was a highly skilled auto body craftsman who helped build the first fiberglass Lafitte skiff. He also helped construct some of the earliest Dune buggies used in Mardi Gras parades.
He never sought attention, but his presence always mattered. John will be deeply missed by his loving family, and those who had the pleasure of knowing him. His kindness, loyalty, and warmth live on in our hearts.
