John Owensby Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Park Funeral Home - Main Chapel on Feb. 13, 2026.
John L. Owensby, born May 29, 1943, in Hall County, Georgia, was the beloved son of the late Fred and Cordie Baker Owenby. John was known and respected as "the best transmission man around," dedicating 45 years of his life to his successful shop and the trade he loved. Customers came not only for his skill, but also because they trusted him. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and share a story, a laugh, and a moment of kindness.

John proudly served his country as a Vietnam Veteran in the United States Air Force. During his service, he received the distinguished honor of Airman of the Month in April 1967.

Above all, John was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Willie Jean Harris Owensby, with whom he shared 35 wonderful years of marriage. He was a loving grandfather and an amazing great-grandfather who treasured every moment spent with his family. He especially treasured the time he spent with his great-grandson, Adam Williams, who lovingly called him his best friend. Whether sharing stories, laughter, or simply everyday moments, their bond brought Johnny great joy.

In addition to his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Wendell Owenby, and his sister, Donna Wingo.

He is survived by his son, Randall Owensby, and daughter, Kim Mathis, both of Gillsville; grandchildren: Morgan (Michael) Williams, Amber (Jonathan) Danner, Hunter (Bailey) Mathis, Aubrey Owensby, and Carter Mathis. He also leaves behind his cherished great-grandchildren: Adam Williams, Charlie Williams, Parker Williams, Garrett Williams, Ramsey Danner, Oakley Danner, Case Mathis, and Baylor Mathis. Sister Pearline Vogh (Warren) of Cleveland.
