Obituary
John Darby Palmer
June 26, 1947 – January 8, 2024
John Darby Palmer, 76, passed away on January 8, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings, Montana.
John was born on June 26, 1947, in Los Angeles, California, to Jack Byron and Eva Mae (Darby) Palmer. Growing up in the warmth of California, John graduated from Taft High School in Woodland Hills before embarking on a four-year journey in the Navy. During his service, he met the love of his life, Janis, on a blind date. Their connection was instantaneous, leading to their marriage on September 20, 1969, proving that sometimes, love truly is at first sight.
After an honorable discharge from the Navy, John and Janis returned to Woodland Hills, where he pursued higher education. In 1973 the couple welcomed their first-born son, Greg, into the world. In 1975 they found their forever home in Worland, Wyoming, where Darby and Kevin completed their loving family.
John dedicated a portion of his professional life to Pepsi, initially hauling sugar from the Sugar factory to Pepsi. He worked for Valley Motor Supply for a number of years. He then worked for Coors Intermountain as their outside salesman, before returning to the automotive industry working for Hines Motor Supply. His career evolved, and he eventually became a water treatment specialist for the city. Beyond his professional accomplishments, John served as the captain of the search and rescue squad for many years, exemplifying his commitment to the well-being of his community.
Upon retirement, John found solace and joy in the comfort of his home. A man of simple pleasures, he loved to fish, hunt birds and deer in his free time, enjoying the tranquility of nature. Baseball held a special place in his heart, and he cherished moments spent with his children, emphasizing the importance of family bonds.
In 2022, facing health challenges, John moved to the Sweetwater Retirement Center in Billings, Montana, where he spent the remaining years of his life.
John Darby Palmer was a humble soul who never sought much from life. His appreciation for the simple things, coupled with his unwavering love for family, left a permanent mark on those fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, dedication, and simplicity will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by his presence.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kevin Palmer and sister, Jackie Lorden.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janis; son, Gregory (Pandora) Palmer of Billings, Montana; daughter, Darby Palmer of Nevada City, California; sister, Chris Lopez of California, grandchild Tymon Palmer, and several nieces and nephews.
Services are pending. Memorial donations may be made to Sweetwater Retirement Community of Billings. Checks can be sent to 3140 Sweetwater Drive Billings, MT 59102. Online condolences may be made at www.bryantfuneralhomeonline.com.
