John Palmer Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 19, 2025.
John W Palmer, Jr, age 94, died August 8, 2025, in his Mission Oaks, Oxford, Florida, apartment, with family and dear staff members of Mission Oaks at his side.

John loved living at Mission Oaks. John's family particularly wants to thank Mission Oaks for the love, care and support they gave to him.

Members of hospice gave invaluable guidance and support through John's last days. Quietly and in the background, John's beloved cat, Sheba, kept watch over her best friend, John, as he lived his last days.

John's funeral will be in the city he grew up in, Houston, TX, at South Main Baptist Church in the Westmoreland Chapel, 4100 Main Street on Friday, August 29th, at 11:00 a.m. (CST). Rev Greg Funderburk will lead John's service. No graveside services will be held.

John and his wife, Bernice, raised two daughters, Cheryl Palmer (Janet Rundquist) and Denise Palmer (Patty Rouse). John's 33-year career in finance with Texaco was characterized by him using his gifts of genuine interest in everyone he met, affirmation of those in his work group and an ability to bring together a team to accomplish a common goal. After retiring from Texaco, John worked 14 years for the City of Houston in the Housing Department as the Manager of Affordable Housing. He drew inspiration by helping people to achieve their dream of owning their own home.

John gave back to his community in a wide array of activities. Along with his wife, Bernice, he participated in a ministry of South Main Baptist, by visiting out-of-town patients at MD Anderson Cancer Hospital. His visits served as a reminder of the concern of the church for patients facing serious illness. For many years, he served as a church deacon and was active in a wide range of Sunday School roles, including Sunday School Director. He served as the President of the Sharpstown Civic Association, an organization dedicated to making their neighborhood strong and welcoming. Later in life, he married Virginia Lootens and both enjoyed family gatherings with Virginia's children and grandchildren.

John is also survived by his sister, Jean Sampson (Glenn Sampson) and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John W Palmer, Sr and Hortense Palmer and his brother, Franklin Curtis Palmer.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to South Main Baptist Church, Houston, TX in John's memory. He loved his church-particularly its music ministry and pastoral care ministry.
