John Panagopoulos

Attorney John Panagopoulos passed away at his home in Malden, Massachusetts on December 18, 2025. He was born on June 24, 1963. Beloved son of the late Andrew and Pauline (Coutavas) Panagopoulos of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and beloved brother of late Christos Panagopoulos.

John grew up in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He was an avid bicyclist as a boy, exploring the town often on bike joined by his brother and sometimes his father as well. John attended public school and graduated from Haverhill High School in 1981, where he excelled in English and Biology, was a National Honors Society student, and participated in the Spanish Club and the Greek Club. John tutored other students in Math and was a contributor to the Brown and Gold – Haverhill High School's newspaper.

John spent some years helping to take care of his mother after his father had passed. John inherited a love of education from his mother, a public school science teacher of 42 years. Just as she had achieved advanced degrees, John graduated from Tufts University in 1985, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English. In 1987 he received his Master of Arts in English from Northeastern University, followed by a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Massachusetts – Boston, in 1991. In 2005 John became an attorney, graduating from Suffolk University Law School with his Juris Doctor.

John continued to play a role in the community at Tufts University, where he retained a presence as Alumni Chairperson and interviewer of new student candidates.

John began his professional career working in government initially for the federal government in 1987. He switched to state government in 1992, and had a long and distinguished career there, working 33 years in state service for both the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, and (post-merger) with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

John is remembered by his friends as a well-mannered and good-natured gentleman. He was a scholar, as evidenced by a rich vocabulary and writing style. John was also an engaging conversationalist who will be missed by those close to him.

John took great joy from traveling. He travelled extensively with his family, visiting many states and countries, enjoying trips in recent years to the Holy Land, and as far as Australia and New Zealand.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 19 from 10-10:30 AM at the Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter Street, in Haverhill. A funeral service will follow at 10:30am at the church. Burial will be in the Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill, where John will be laid to rest with his grandparents, brother, and his father and mother. There will be a light luncheon to follow at the church.
