John Jerry Patera, 87 of Perrysburg, passed away Monday, January 8, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family. John was born June 14, 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio to John and Mary (Koptis) Patera. John proudly served our country in the United States Navy. He married Carol Pawlus on June 27, 1959 in Brunswick, Ohio and they shared 54 years together until she passed on November 22, 2013.
John worked at The Wall Street Journal for over 40 years, he started as a Linotype operator and worked his way up to foreman. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Perrysburg. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening but most of all loved to cut his grass on his riding lawnmower. He really enjoyed being outdoors. John loved watching sports and was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his children; John (Beth) Patera, Michael Patera, Michelle Launder, Denise (Willie) Walker, Margie (Ray Royal) Oakley and Carla (Scott) McDonald; thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Along with his wife Carol, he was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Mildred Perry, Stella Emerick and Luanna Patera.
Friends and family will be received Sunday, January 14, 2024 from 1-7 p.m. at Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg (419-874-3133) where visitation will continue Monday, January 15, 2024 from 11-Noon with a funeral service beginning at noon. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the American Heart Association, Breast Cancer awareness, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
