John Paterson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John B. Brown Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 11, 2026.
John R. "Randy" Paterson (aka: Dolph, Frog, Pap), kicked the buck-buck-bucket on Sunday, February 8, 2026.

Randy was known for living life to the fullest. He had a big personality, a quick smile, and a way of making every room feel lighter just by being in it. He believed in having fun, telling a good story, and making the most out of every day.

Randy was an avid fisherman and hunter who felt most at home outdoors. Whether he was out on the water at sunrise or in the woods at dawn, he treasured the peace and purpose he found in nature. Those who spent time with him outdoors knew it wasn't just about the catch or the hunt - it was about the memories made along the way.

Above all else, Randy was devoted to his wife and family. He was a loving husband, a proud father, a caring brother, and a cherished Pap. He took great joy in time spent with his family and was deeply proud of each of them. His love was steady, strong, and constant.

Randy will be remembered for his larger-than-life spirit, his sense of humor, and the way he showed up for the people he loved. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, laughter, and unforgettable moments that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Randy is survived by his wife, Judith Paterson (Judy Pirl); a daughter, Natahsha Baumgartner and husband, Wade; two sons, Jesse Paterson and wife, Jordan, and Nathan Paterson and wife, Amanda; a step-daughter, Teresa Cossell; a step-son, Chad Pirl; two nephews, Drew Paterson and wife Jessica, and Charlie Paterson and wife, Robin; a niece, Sarah Cook and husband, Jay; nine grandchildren, Gerika, June, Elsie, and Eva Saulen, Jayce and Daniel Paterson, and Elliot, Layla and James Paterson; and nine step-grandchildren, Andrew, Haley, Freya and, Aiden Cossell, Christine, Ava, Elizabeth and Brooke Wiedeman, and Lexi Pirl. Dolph is also survived by a brother and two sisters, Alice "Allie" Bird, Phillip Drew Paterson Jr. and wife, Patti, and Jane Ayers and husband Jim.

Randy was preceded in death by his father and mother, Phillip Drew Paterson Sr. and Francis Paterson Cowan; and a sister, Kimberly Kay Paterson.

A celebration of Randy's life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 15, 2025, at the Standing Stone VFW Post 1754, 520 Penn St, Huntingdon, PA 16652. Food will be provided but covered dishes and desserts are welcome.

Randy and Phil were great neighbors to our Pocono cabin, Randy shared fun stories from his life in the woods and water. His encounter with an angry beaver was a classic. Ice fishing was an adventure in itself with breakfast followed by a careful layout of fishing rigs each supported by wind dams. Chairs a wind screen and exciting hookups. All interspersed with stories and laughter. He will be missed by all in our family!
