John David Paulding, affectionately known as "Dave" to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, at the age of 89 in Clawson, Michigan. A dedicated patriot, loving husband, and steadfast friend, Dave lived a life defined by service, integrity, and an unwavering sense of duty.
Born on April 2, 1935, in Greenville, Illinois, to John and Pearl Miller, Dave grew up with a strong appreciation for education and hard work. He graduated from Vandalia High School in 1953 before continuing his studies at the University of Illinois. His academic pursuits, however, would soon be paralleled by a remarkable military career.
Dave served heroically in the United States Army, first stationed in France from 1959 to 1961. His commitment to his country led him back into service during the Vietnam War in 1965, where he spent one year in the Army and six years with Air America, serving in both Vietnam and Laos. His dedication to his mission was unparalleled, and his experiences in these critical times shaped the man he became.
Never one to shy away from challenge, Dave returned to school to earn a master's degree in Library Science before once again answering the call to service. In 1977, he was stationed in Iran, navigating the complex political climate during the final sixteen months of the Shah's regime and the dawn of the Islamic Republic.
After his time overseas, Dave settled in San Antonio, Texas, in 1979, where he worked as a hospital librarian and later for the government. Eventually, in July 1994, he made Clawson, Michigan, his permanent home, where he spent more than 20 years enjoying life with family and friends.
On October 12, 1971, Dave married the love of his life, Lisa Paulding, in Laos. Together, they built a life full of love, adventure, and shared joy. Dave was a man of deep intellect and curiosity, an avid reader who was rarely seen without a book in his hands. His wisdom and humor made him a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew him.
Dave is survived by his devoted wife, Lisa, his children Beatrice (Kevin) Caylands and Bill Paulding, and his four beloved grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl Paulding, and his sister, Jane (Richard) Parker.
A life well-lived, a heart well-loved, and a service well-rendered-Dave's legacy will endure in the hearts of those who had the honor of knowing him. His family takes comfort in knowing that his story, marked by courage and kindness, will continue to inspire generations to come.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to honor and celebrate Dave's extraordinary life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a veterans' organization of choice in his memory.

Thank you Dad, for all your words of wisdom and help back in Panama. I have been working in Khon Kaen and made a trip to the Thai Laos border town of Nong Kai. You and Mom were on my mind while on the train going there.
