John David Paulding, known as "David" to his loved ones, died peacefully on January 15, 2025, at 89. He was a devoted patriot, loving husband, father, and loyal friend. His life of service, integrity, and unwavering sense of duty inspire us all.
David, the son of John and Pearl Paulding, was born on April 2, 1935, in Greenville, Illinois. He graduated from Vandalia High School with the class of 1953. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue higher education at the University of Illinois, a testament to his dedication to learning and personal growth.
In 1959, David began his military service in France until 1961. His commitment to service led him to the Vietnam War. In 1965, he served in the Army, followed by an additional six years with Air America, operating in Vietnam and Laos.
Upon his return from Southeast Asia, David embarked on a lengthy career in civil service, dedicating over 37 years to the Department of Defense. His service to his country spanned the military and civilian sectors, reflecting a lifelong commitment to duty and public service.
David retired from the Department of Defense after a long and fulfilling career. During his retirement, he enjoyed riding his bike around town, visiting with neighbors, and working with metal. He was especially fond of making mechanical devices that cut stones, metal gears, and other metal parts and structures.
David left behind his loving wife, Lisa, whom he married in Laos on October 12, 1971. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and a man of great wisdom and humor. His commitment to his family was unwavering, and he always sought to provide love and support. David is survived by his wife, Lisa, daughter, Bea, son, and his cherished grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl Paulding, and his sister, Jane Parker.
David's memory will forever be in the hearts of those who knew him. His unwavering courage and boundless kindness characterized him. He faced life's challenges with bravery and met others with compassion, leaving an enduring mark on everyone he encountered. His legacy, carried forward by his beloved family and the countless lives he touched, is a comforting reminder of his unwavering love for others. David's commitment to service will continue inspiring and uplifting, ensuring his spirit lives on for generations.
