Obituary For Kathleen (Burke) Paulding
Kathleen "Kate" (Burke) Paulding
1939 – 2026
ROCKLAND – Kathleen (Kate) Burke Paulding, 86, a lifelong Rockland native and a force of nature within her community, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026. She is now reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, the late Robert E. Paulding, and the many family members and dear friends who preceded her.
A Legacy of Leadership
The daughter of the late Everett and Cecelia Burke, Kate grew up in Rockland, where she was known in her youth as a high-stepping majorette who was "always out front and leading the way." This natural leadership defined her life. She spent her early years at Burke's Pharmacy, mastering the art of the soda fountain and developing a legendary precision for gift-wrapping chocolates and perfumes-a skill she later passed down to her children.
A graduate of the Accounting Program at Katherine Gibbs Business School in Boston, Kate possessed an exceptional talent for mathematics. She funneled this expertise and her tireless energy into local advocacy. She was a founder of the Rockland Town Girls Basketball league, a Camp Fire Girls leader, a CCD instructor, and a driving force behind "Operation Goblin" and the Rockland Centennial Celebration.
Long before the digital age, Kate transformed her family room into a grassroots campaign headquarters, serving as a seasonal campaign manager and teaching aspiring politicians how to "run the boards" and connect with their community.
A Dedicated Educator
While juggling family and community service, Kate pursued her passion for education, earning her bachelor's degree from Bridgewater State University in 1984. She rose from paraprofessional to teacher, beginning her career in the basement of the former Junior High School. She held a lifelong affection for at-risk students and was a fierce advocate for her colleagues, serving as President of both the Rockland and Plymouth County Teachers Associations. Alongside her dear friend Sandra McConn Stephenson, she secured vital improvements for teacher retirement and professional development. Fittingly, Kate concluded her teaching career in the very same Memorial Park School classroom where her mother had taught decades prior.
Family and Tradition
Kate's heart was always with her family and her cherished "beach family" at Saquish Beach. She was known for her competitive spirit to get to the cottage before the snow had even melted. Her creativity was boundless; she baked and decorated wedding cakes for her nieces, shared endless loaves of pumpkin and banana bread with her husband Bob, and was famous for her legendary Harvest Cake and deviled eggs.
A gifted artist, Kate gave away thousands of hand-painted ceramic Christmas ornaments over the years, each detailed with the names of her students, nieces, nephews, and her extended family.
Survivors
Kate is survived by her children:
• Robin P. McGowan and husband Charles of St. Petersburg, FL;
• William (Bill) Paulding and partner Edward MacDonald of Boylston;
• Edward E. Paulding of Whitman;
• Peter Venuti of Whitman;
• Kathleen A. Paulding and her son Thomas Reyno of Abington.
She also leaves behind 32 nieces and nephews whom she adored and "bragged about" constantly, and her brother-in-law, Francis McDougall. She was the sister of the late Rosemary McDougall and the late William Burke.
The family wishes to express their eternal gratitude to the staff at Life Care Center of the South Shore for their compassionate care and for embracing Kate's humor throughout her journey with Alzheimer's.
