John H. Payne

John Howard Payne, passed away on the 26th of August, 2025, on his 84th birthday, surrounded by the love of his family. Born to John Washington Payne and Mary Gladys Payne (nee Figgs) on August 26, 1941, John's life was marked by dedication, service, and the joy of simple pleasures.
After graduating from Pocomoke High School in 1960, John demonstrated his commitment to his country by enlisting in the Marine Corps. During his service, he was recognized for his marksmanship with the Rifle Expert badge and his conduct with the Good Conduct medal. He served honorably until his discharge in 1964 and continued to serve in the Marine Corps reserve until April 1966.
Upon returning to his hometown of Pocomoke, John began a long and respected career as a mechanic at Carlton Massey Ford. His natural aptitude for mechanics saw him rise through the ranks to become Service Manager, a position he held until his retirement. John's ability to fix anything mechanical was nothing short of a gift, and he generously shared this talent with all who knew him.
John's family was the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his loving children, Stephen (Stacey) W. Payne of Pocomoke City, MD, and Susan (Stephen) E. Chamberlin of Salisbury, MD. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Allen P. Payne of Salisbury, MD, Diana M. Payne of Pittsburgh, PA, and Susan's children, Logan and Lucas.
John's interests were as grounded as he was. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of babysitting grandchildren, spending time with friends at the local breakfast spot or fraternal club or tinkering on some small project. Leisure time often found him shooting pool, throwing darts, or embracing the tranquility of fishing and hunting. His wisdom and handiness were the pillars upon which he built his life and enriched the lives of those around him.
He was a proud member of the Pocomoke City Elks #1624 and the American Legion Worcester Post #93, where his camaraderie and commitment to service were deeply valued. John's presence was a steadfast one, providing a foundation of support and love in all his community and family endeavors.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful people at A New Dawn Assisted Living for their compassionate care in John's final year. His life was a testament to the values of hard work, service, and the importance of family and community. John Howard Payne will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his memory will continue to inspire and guide us. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose, love, and an enduring legacy that will be cherished forever.
A funeral service will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 4, 2025 in Holloway Funeral Home, Pocomoke. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 6:00 PM on Thursday in the funeral home. Private burial will be in Remson United Methodist Church Cemetery.
