John Ovid Phillips, Jr., of O’Fallon, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 74.
He was the beloved husband of Margaret Rose Phillips; loving father of James Brennan Phillips and Charlie Phillips; dear brother of Joan Noser, Steve (Connie) Phillips, Dan Phillips, Michael Phillips, Peggy (Ed) Kuehner, Maureen Mitchell, Madeleine (Andy) Chavez, and Bob (Janice) Phillips. He was a cherished uncle, godfather, cousin, brother-in-law, nephew, and friend to many.
John was preceded in death by his father, John Ovid Phillips; his mother, Margaret Agnes Phillips; and his daughter, Maureen Theresa Phillips.
John worked for many years as an HVAC technician, specializing in residential and light commercial heating and cooling. He was known for his strong work ethic, mechanical skill, and willingness to help family and friends whenever they needed him — and truly, John could fix anything.
When Johnny got that twinkle in his eye, you knew he was winding up to tell a tall tale. He especially liked to spin yarns for his friend Linda and his sister-in-law, Pat. You could count on John for his quick wit and ready joke. He could talk to anyone, listen to their stories, and make them feel seen. He would drop everything to help a person in need.
John loved to travel, visiting 46 states and the countries of Peru, Ireland, Canada, and Germany. He was immensely proud of his Irish heritage and knew all the words to Danny Boy.
Johnny loved sports — especially Cardinals baseball — and always stayed until the final pitch. Soccer was an important part of his life, including the games he played, the matches he watched, and the teammates who became lifelong friends. Johnny fondly recalled his years at McBride High School and his classmates. At reunion basketball games, he would chuckle about all the old guys in the stands before realizing he was one of them.
John was a proud papa. What a joyful day it was when James was accepted into Notre Dame. John watched him flourish there and grow into the thoughtful, caring man he is today. He embraced all the adventures that Charlie pursued. John was in charge of videoing Charlie’s finish at his first half marathon. He was so excited he captured only a picture of Charlie’s feet running by — a moment that became a cherished family memory. John was such a loving caregiver to baby Maureen. He missed her every day.
John walked with cancers, kidney disease, and ALS, yet never felt defeated by them. He treated every day as a special gift. He had an extensive community of family and friends who loved him dearly.
John was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Memorial contributions may be made to Washington University Tim Miller ALS Research Support.
Imagine a world with more hope.
