John Joseph Pisano, a lifelong New Jerseyan and landscaping enthusiast, passed away on March 4th, 2026, at the age of 72. Born on February 10th, 1954, John spent his life between the soil and the sea, leaving a legacy of beauty in every garden he touched.
As the founder and owner of Birchside Gardens, John was a visionary landscaper who transformed houses and corporate spaces into lush, living works of art. His career was defined by a lifelong devotion to his craft; he spent many years owning his own business before transitioning to local nurseries, where he continued to share his vast plant knowledge and expertise. John also spent a number of years working with the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, which stemmed from a lifelong passion for biking on the MS170 Bike Ride.
A true son of the Jersey Shore, John was happiest near the water. In his younger years, he could be found surfing with friends. Later in life, he ensured every home he lived in was close to the coast. His children—Robert, Lauren, and Chris—have fond memories cruising the streets of Cape May on family vacation in his truck, listening to CDs of James Taylor, Kenny Loggins, Carly Simon, and Billy Joel on repeat. In his later years, his most constant companion was his chocolate lab, Cassie, whom he loved taking for long walks along the shoreline.
John is survived by his three children: Robert Pisano, Lauren James (husband, Tyrice) and granddaughter Ava James; and Chris Pisano. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lillian, and his brother, Robert. John’s memory will live on in the salt air and the gardens he planted, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
