A celebration to honor the life of John Preston, 74, of Brownsboro, is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Rock Hill Baptist Church, with Michael Acres officiating.
John Preston passed away peacefully on February 5, 2025, in Bonham, Texas, surrounded by his loving family.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Ross Preston and Hattie Ophelia Preston, and eight of his siblings.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Sheryl Preston; daughters, Carmen Walker (and husband Bobby), Clare Eaton, and Dorothy Preston; son, John Preston, Jr.; grandchildren Sydney (16), Colette (13), Phoenix (12), Auburn (10), and Cassel (7); brothers, Tommy Lee Preston of Athens, Texas and Steven Preston; and sister, Wrena Mae Preston (and husband Frank) Sessions of Athens, Texas.
Born June 13, 1950, in Frankston, Texas, John lived a life marked by unwavering service, selfless generosity, and a contagious sense of humor. He attended Frankston High School, where he excelled in baseball and track and actively participated in FFA. After graduation, his dedication to service continued with his enlistment in the United States Army, where he proudly and honorably served our country for 20 years. John's distinguished military career included several tours of duty in the Vietnam War and well as overseas postings to Germany. His bravery and commitment earned him numerous medals and commendations, including the Army Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal (awarded to him five times), and several others. Beyond his official duties as a Sergeant, John's selfless nature was recognized when he received a commendation for volunteering as the bus driver for the base youth. His 20-year military career molded his character and instilled in him a deep sense of duty and loyalty.
Following his military service, John returned to East Texas, where he began employment at Goodyear Tire and remained there for 15 years until the plant closed its doors in 2008. He decided to continue serving the community over the next 5 years as a Detention Officer with the Smith County Sheriff's Department, where he was honored by being named as Detention Officer of the Year. Even in retirement, John's commitment to serving others continued through "The Lawn Ranger," a personal endeavor where he generously mowed lawns for disabled veterans, widows of veterans, and the elderly free of charge until July 2022. His faith as a Christian guided him throughout his life, shaping the way he cared for others. Whether through small acts of kindness or larger gestures of assistance, he was always willing to lend a helping hand.
John's hobbies included playing casino games, traveling, and most importantly, spending precious time with his family. He was a man of integrity and always placed God first. Known throughout his community for his infectious smile, boundless kindness, and generous spirit, he touched countless lives with his willingness to be there for others when they needed him. John possessed a remarkable ability to connect with people, never meeting a stranger, and always leaving a lasting impression. His quick wit and playful pranks brought joy to those around him.
John's happiest moments were those spent surrounded by his loving wife, daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of service, compassion, and unshakable faith will continue to inspire generations to come.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Clyde W. Cosper State Veteran's Home and the Hospice Plus team for the exceptional care provided to John.
