John Lawrence Redmond, age 93, a lifelong resident of Lake Forest, passed away Wednesday evening, December 18, 2024, in Vernon Hills, IL.
The Redmond family were among the original community of Irish workers who gravitated to Everett and West Lake Forest, eventually becoming active founding members of Lake Forest.
Mr. Redmond was born September 3, 1931, to the late John E. and the late Daisy Redmond. He graduated from the School of St. Mary in Lake Forest and went on to graduate from St. George High School in Chicago. John enlisted in the United States Armed Forces and served in the Korean War. He was a skilled plumber and a respected member of Plumber's Union – Local 130.
John was married for 42 years to his late wife, Judy Edwards Redmond. He was the beloved father of the late Rosemary Lynn Redmond Strohl, (Randall Strohl), the late Renée Louise Redmond, Patricia Joanne Redmond (William L. Landry), and the late John Patrick Redmond. John cherished his status as grandfather of Renée Strohl, and great-grandfather of Mackenzie Spear.
John and his family had a passion for the arts and loved symphonic music. He was a dedicated gardener. The Redmond family house on North Washington Circle had expansive floral gardens celebrated for John's exceptional grove of dahlias and peonies. The house was also marked with a tall flagpole and a proud flag of the University of Notre Dame, always hoisted on football weekends. Family and friends knew John as Notre Dame's No.1 Fan. But his enthusiasm for Notre Dame extended beyond their sports programs. As often as possible John would return from Sunday Mass at the Church of St. Mary to watch the telecasts of the Mass from Notre Dame's Sacred Heart Basilica.
John has passed on his Irish smile to his family and friends – a smile that will continue to wear as they remember him with gratitude and joy.
A private interment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery in Lake Forest, Illinois.

RIP, Red Dog. Thank you for making me part of your family and always making me welcome in your home. You had a good sense of humor and we always ended up laughing. You are missed already. Frenchie.

I would often see John at the St. Mary cemetery. As I was planting flowers at my wife´s family gravesite, he would stop and we would chat about the history of Lake Forest. He was a wonderful man and very proud of his heritage.
