Jay was born on October 21st, 1932, near the farming community of Atlanta, Missouri. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1950 and then served in the United States Army for nearly 2 years in Korea. He married his sweetheart, Yvonna Mae Todd on February 6th, 1955, in Kansas City, Kansas where they lived for over 30 years and were married for 61 years before her death in 2017. Jay became quite skilled at restoring and repairing antique furniture as well as plying himself as a handyman. Over the years they also lived in Hartville and Lowry City, Missouri before returning to Kansas City in 2016 to be nearer to their kids and grandkids.
