John E. Ritts

John E. Ritts, 82, of Granville Summit, Pa., passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 16, 1943, at his home in Emlenton, Pa., John was the son of the late Fred "Shorty" and Alberta "Bertie" (Whitling) Ritts. He attended Cranberry High School in Seneca, Pa., graduating with the Class of 1961. He continued his education at Clarion University, earning a bachelor's degree in biology, and later received his master's degree from Elmira College.

On August 28, 1965, John married the love of his life, the former Cheryl Campbell, at the Seneca United Methodist Church. Together they shared sixty wonderful years of marriage and raised three children.

John dedicated 36 years to teaching biology at Towanda Area High School, retiring in 2000. Never one to remain idle, he went on to work as a guard for DuPont in Towanda for an additional 21 years. He was also a devoted volunteer with the Red Cross, and when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, John spent significant time there offering his help to those in need.

In his younger years, John was an avid bowler and proudly achieved a perfect 300 game, earning a place in the bowling hall of fame. He had a passion for the outdoors and looked forward to hunting, fishing, and especially his memorable trips to Alaska. Above all, John cherished his family, finding his greatest joy in the time he spent with them.

John leaves behind his wife; Cheri, at home, children; Kurt Ritts (April Maynard) of Towanda, Colleen Ritts of Canton and Julie Ritts (Jack Wheeler) of Monroeton, grandchildren; Kalie (Mike) Blumenauer and Cortney Ritts, great granddaughters; Ava and Ivy Blumenauer all of Towanda, honorary daughter; Lori Buchanon of Canton, sister-in-law; Joyce Ritts of Seneca, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his sisters and brothers-in-law; Betty (Fred) Hall, and Pat (Larry) Latshaw, brothers and sisters-in-law; Harry Ritts, Paul (Jeanie) Ritts, Glenn (Joyce) Ritts, Harry Ritts, and Paul (Jean) Ritts.
