Alongside her hospital work, she also taught obstetrics at Corning Community College and Elmira College, where she was admired as a skilled educator and compassionate mentor. Even after retiring from the hospital, Shirley continued teaching at Elmira College until 2022.

Beyond her professional life, Shirley loved traveling and enjoyed many ocean cruises and international trips. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Troy and participated in several mission trips to the Dominican Republic where she used her nursing expertise to serve those in need and share her faith.

She is survived by her sisters Eunice Wilston and Pearl Stroud; sister-in-law Sally Forrest; brother-in-law Richard Brass; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She held a special bond with her great-nieces and nephews, Kayla, Carlee, Seth and Ethan.
