John Michael Rubbo 1956-2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Michael Rubbo, who left this world on November 18, 2024, at the age of 68, after a courageous and lengthy battle with esophageal cancer. Surrounded by the love of his family, John's final moments were a testament to the strength and love he shared with those closest to him. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, a beloved son, a cherished uncle, and the world's greatest Pop.
Born on January 13, 1956, in the Bronx, NY, to Carmine and Ada Rubbo, John's journey in life was defined by his dedication to family, hard work, and his deep commitment to his community. He graduated from Mount Saint Michael High School and later attended Fordham University, where he studied business and accounting. But it was in the food industry where John truly found his passion. He channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into opening his own restaurant, Rubiele's, in
Yonkers, NY-a place where he poured his heart into every dish and forged lifelong connections with those he served.
It was also during these years that John met the love of his life, Helen Furgiuele. Together, they built a life filled with love, joy, and adventure, raising three children-John, Joseph, and Jacqualine-in Yonkers. John took immense pride in his role as a father, especially in watching his children excel in sports, creating unforgettable family vacations, and spending summers at Villa Roma. He found joy in every milestone his children achieved, and he was always their biggest cheerleader.
As much as John loved his children, his greatest joy came from his four grandchildren: Dominic, John, Francis, and Amelia. His face would light up whenever he was with them, and the memories they created together will live on in their hearts forever. His love, laughter, and presence were an integral part of their childhoods, and he will be deeply missed by each of them.
A man of deep faith and unwavering values, John was an active member of the St. John the Baptist Church parish in Yonkers. He was also a devoted member of the Order of Sons of Italy-Anthony Maggiacomo Lodge 2320 in Yonkers. John's strong belief in the Lord was reflected in everything he did, and his love for his family, his heritage, and his culture was the foundation of his life.
John is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Helen Rubbo (Furgiuele); his children, John (wife, Dawn), Joseph (wife, Megan), and Jacqualine (husband, James Kopcho); and his four beloved grandchildren. He is also survived by his parents, Carmine and Ada Rubbo, his siblings, Angelo (wife, Rose) and Laura (husband, David Tenenbaum), as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will continue to carry his memory with them.
Memorial Donations in John's memory may be made to
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or
Alzheimer's Association.
