John R. Russell, age 83, of Woodcrest, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024 in his childhood home after a long and gratifying life full of family and friends who adored him. He was the most loving, patient, kind, and quiet man on earth, and his sense of humor persisted to the end.
John was born to Lucy and Daniel Russell in 1941, and attended St. Matthew's Elementary School. He was a 1959 graduate of Salesianum High School. John worked as an office machine technician at Hilyards, retiring after 43 years of service.
John found his love, and partner in life, after being encouraged by his friend, Father Richardson, to meet a girl named Geri. Though their first encounter was brief, Geri knew she had met the man she would marry. After spending more time together, the connection was inevitable and they wed within nine months. This past June they celebrated 55 years of marriage.
Not only was John a devoted husband, father, and fan of Johnny Cash, he was a dedicated member of St. Matthew's Parish, having served as an usher from ages 21 to 79, only retiring when he became ill. There, he coached multiple sports teams and served as president of their YAC. He helped organize the annual crab feast to support the fees and equipment needs. John played softball in many adult leagues including St. Matthew's, DiMichael's, and Defiance as well as on a team with his kids when they were adults. John's favorite pastime though, was spending time on his boat, fishing for largemouth bass. This passion led him to being a member of several fishing clubs, serving as president at one time. One club sponsored a fishing event for kids at Bellevue State Park and in his final year of participation, his grandson was old enough to join him.
John is preceded in death by his parents; his two siblings, Daniel and James; and his beloved cat, Stinky.
He is survived by his wife Geri; his daughter Jennifer Tetrick and son-in-law Jeff; his son Jason Russell and daughter-in-law Lora; his grandson Justin Tetrick; his sister-in-law Karen Russell, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A special thanks to Quinette Brown of Delaware Hospice whose care and attention to both, John and Geri, was greatly appreciated.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August, 21 at 11am. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Wilmington, DE, with visitation from 9-10:45. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to St Matthew's Church.
