John Russell Obituary

Published by Legacy on May 14, 2025.
John William Russell, 63, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, passed away on May 9, 2025, after a tough battle with diabetes and heart issues. In those final moments, he was cared for with compassion and surrounded in spirit by all the love of those who held him dear. In his final days, John spoke of his late father being there in the hospital with him. It brings comfort to know that it was his dad that was there to help him transition to the next life.
Born on August 31, 1961, in San Jose, California, John was the son of the late J.D. Russell and Mary Margaret Alt. He spent his early life in California with his four older siblings. John spoke often of how he idolized his cool older brothers and got roped into playing barbies with his two older sisters. John met his wife Cherie, and they started their family. Soon after, the family moved to West Fork, Arkansas. A loud and proud Razorback fan, John loved nothing more than watching college sports with his friends and getting fired up over a good game. His sense of humor and ability to tell a great story made him the kind of person people liked to be around.
John was a single dad to three kids - Julie, Jessica, and Jared - and while life wasn't always easy, he loved his children deeply and did his best to give them a good home and a childhood filled with memories. His greatest joy later in life was being "Papa" to his grandkids: Davian Girty, Jaida Elliott, Annakin Elliott, and Adelyn Russell. Though he wasn't able to meet his newest grandson, Oliver John Horn, who was just 9 days old when John passed, his family will make sure Oliver grows up knowing all about his Papa.
John was preceded in death by his parents, J.D. Russell and Mary Margaret Alt, and his ex-wife, Cherie Deloy. He leaves behind his stepmother, Joan Russell; brothers, Bob and Jim Russell; sisters, Leslie Fotion and Janie Lewis; his children, Julie Horn, Jessica Russell, and Jared Russell; his grandchildren, and many friends, who will carry his memory with them always.
A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced. All are welcome to come share their fondest memories and enjoy the company of family and friends as we honor his life.
John will be remembered for his sharp wit, stubborn streak, big heart, loyalty to his friends, and deep love for his family. He'll be missed more than words can say.
"To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die." - Thomas Campbell
