Obituary of John Sahlberg
John Frederick Sahlberg, 75, of Duluth, MN, passed away from medical complications after a long fight with cancer on February 2nd, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones.
John was born on May 3rd, 1949 in Duluth to Fred and Marian Sahlberg. He was raised in the Hunter's Park neighborhood and spent his summers at his parents' cabin on Pequaywan Lake. He graduated from Cathedral High School and attended UMD with a focus on geography and cartography.
He was a natural athlete and picked up sports with ease. He was an excellent bowler and earned a spot on the All-City Team. He was also a member of his high school golf team. His hobbies included all things science fiction, eclectic music and expanding his knowledge through documentaries, encyclopedias and various other media.
He married his wife Kathy in December 1985 and raised his family on Park Point where he enjoyed living along the beach. The lakeshore held a special place in his heart, especially Madeline Island-a cherished childhood retreat he often visited with his best friend Paul Maire and his son Peter.
He retired from Georgia Pacific as a press operator in 2012 and spent his free time reading, watching sports and listening to his vast collection of vinyl records. He often took scenic drives listening to the radio and enjoyed quality time with his son at some of his favorite local spots like the Anchor Bar and Shamrock Pizza. He was also an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan.
He was predeceased by his parents, his former wife, Kathy, and his son, Alex. He is survived by his son Peter and his fiancée, Mary Titus; his sister, JoAnn Zarins; and his stepsons, Benjamin (along with his wife, Heidi, and their children, Tegan and Avery) and James Chadwick.
A gathering for friends and family will be held at a future date.
John will be missed for his humor, kindness, and inquisitive spirit. Thank you to Hilltop HealthCare, Aspirus St. Luke's Oncology and the ICU team for the compassionate care shown to John.
