John "Jack" Sallmen, 85, of Shenango Twp. passed away with family at his side early Thursday morning, May 9, 2024, in UPMC Jameson Hospital.
Mr. Sallmen was born March 25, 1939, in New Castle, a son of the late Paul Sallmen, Sr. and Ruth (Strong) Sallmen.
An exceptional baker, Jack learned the trade as a boy and continued to improve his skills throughout his life. In addition to owning and operating Sallmen's Bakery on East Washington St., he had also baked for New Model Bakery, Danish Bakery, Mounts Pastries, and Value King Grocery.
Jack was a member of First Assembly of God Church and also attended Life Changing Ministries, both in Neshannock Twp.
He was a "Jack of all Trades" and endlessly tinkering with anything he could find.
"Pap," as he was affectionately called, was a family man who dedicated his life to caring for his wife, their family, and the home. His 19 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren were the joy of his life.
His beloved wife of 69 years, Shirley (Boughter) Sallmen, whom he married March 26, 1955, survives at home.
Jack is also survived by eight children, John Sallmen, Jr. (Denise), Hickory Twp., Shirley Baird, Hickory Twp., Kimberly Catale (Brian), Union Twp., Cindy Sager (James), Union Twp., Tammy Anderson, Mahoning Twp., Terri Coiro, Shenango Twp., Richard Sallmen (Shirley), Enon Valley, and Joseph Sallmen (Michelle), Mahoning Twp.; a brother, Daniel Sallmen, Hermitage; two sisters, Thelma Sallmen, Tucson, AZ, and Carol Jo Gibson, New Castle; 19 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Jim, Fred, and Bill Sallmen; four sisters, Ruth Campbell, Mary Jane Barton, Martha Haza, and Helen Mae Haza; three sons-in-law, Kerby Baird, Nick Coiro, and Robert Anderson, Sr.; and a granddaughter, Crystal Catale.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Life Changing Ministries, 2929 Mercer Rd., New Castle, PA 16105.
Calling hours will be 1 to 3 p.m. Monday (5-13-24) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls, New Castle.
Funeral service will be held immediately following, in the funeral home, with Pastor Bill Rupert, officiating.
Interment: Graceland Cemetery, Neshannock Twp.
