Coal Township– John I. Schankweiler, 89, of 1523 Trevorton Road, passed away November 3, 2025 at The Gardens of Orangeville.
Born in Danville on December 6, 1935, to the late John R. Schankweiler and Myrtle (Strausser) Schankweiler. Married on June 13, 1959, at the First Baptist Church, Lansdale, to Joyce Cox. Together they celebrated 66 years of marriage.
John graduated Shamokin Area High School in 1953. He was an alumni President for the Shamokin Area High School for his senior class of 1953. In John’s younger years, he enjoyed swimming and played the French horn in the Shamokin Area High School band. He served in the United States Navy as an electrician on the ship, USS Iowa BB61 and was a coordinator for Navy Reunions. He worked at the Shamokin Coal Township Joint Sewer Authority as the Sewage Treatment Plant Director of Operations. He was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, Shamokin, and the Lions Club, Shamokin. He volunteered as a driver for VA Transportation.
John loved football and was a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State. He enjoyed woodworking, and had his own woodworking shop.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Dawn Schankweiler and her life partner Holly Simonson of Blandon; four brothers-in-law, William Cox and his wife Patti of Pottsville, Robert A. Cox, NV, Charles E. Cox and his wife Sandy of Coaldale, George T. Cox and his wife Alice of Lansdale; two sisters-in-law, Linda Phillips and her husband Robert of Lansdale, and Roma Schankweiler; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, John was proceeded in death by his brother, Wayne R. Schankweiler; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leland E. and Edith H. (Fellman) Cox.
FUNERAL NOTICE
John Schankweiler, 89, of Coal Township – Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 with Reverend Doctor Robert Stoudt, officiating, at Farrow-Campbell Funeral & Cremation Service, Inc., 240 W Chestnut Street, Shamokin, Lori Ann Campbell, Supervisor. Viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:00 am – 11:00 am. Burial will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at 12:30 PM. Please arrive at the funeral home at 10:30 am to join the family procession, leaving at 10:45 am. Arrangements are being cared for by Farrow-Campbell Funeral & Cremation Service, Inc., 240 W Chestnut Street, Shamokin, Lori Ann Campbell, Supervisor.
