John Patrick Schmelka, 55, of West Fargo, ND, passed away unexpectedly on September 1, 2025. A devoted father, brother, uncle, friend, and beloved "grand-paw," John's presence will be deeply missed by the many lives he touched.

John was born on May 15, 1970, in Brooklyn, NY, to Dr. Daniel and BettyAnne (King) Schmelka. In 1977, the family moved to Grand Forks, ND, where John spent his childhood. He was an active and spirited kid who especially loved hockey, a passion that stayed with him throughout his life.

He went on to attend the University of North Dakota, with countless Friday nights spent "studying at the library". After graduation, John began his career with ESCO Weir, where he dedicated over 28 years of service.

Life eventually brought John to West Fargo, where he put down roots and helped raise his children, Anna and Adam. It was here that he poured his energy into creating a loving home, filled with laughter, backyard fun, and endless memories.

Of all his accomplishments, none compared to the pride and joy he found in being a father. His children were his world, and he devoted himself wholeheartedly to their happiness, well-being, and success. That same love extended to his role as "Grand-paw" to Nova and Howard, his grandpups, who could always count on extra treats, belly rubs, and a soft spot on his lap.

During his free time, John loved relaxing in his backyard at the "Schmelka Pool & Bar," enjoying a vacation relaxing in Marco Island, or making one of his many friendly check-in calls to his family and friends.

In recent years, John found great happiness in sharing time with his companion, Valerie. Whether traveling together, spending time with family and friends, or simply enjoying each other's company, their time together brought John immense joy.

John is survived by his children, Anna & Adam Schmelka; "da puppies", Nova & Howard; his companion, Valerie Moxness, her children, and grandsons; his siblings, Christine Nagel and Dan (Katy) Schmelka; his nephew and nieces, Danny, Francie, & Sarah; his extended Canadian family; and many friends who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by, his father and mother, Dr. Daniel & BettyAnne Schmelka; his uncles, Victor King, Jeffery King, and Barclay Lennen; and his aunt, Patricia King.

With a story for every situation and a perfectly timed joke for any occasion, John had a gift for lighting up a room. His humor, warmth, and unwavering love for his family and friends will never be forgotten.
