I have fond memories of John Schuler as an effective and inspirational teacher. He was a helpful, encouraging and amusing presence on the campus. Even 40 years later, I remember him from time to time with a smile.

Indeed one teacher can make a difference in your life. No wonder decades later people hold such strong memories and gratitude for 'my favorite teacher.' Today I send a heartfelt sense of passing to Edwina, with whom I shared emails over the past few years. And a profound and fond homage to Mr. Schuler whose teaching awakened my 14 year old brain years ago at Dana Hall. His personality and original jovial open approach to teaching bring a forever smile, and left an indelible interest in history and even a first awakening to geopolitics. Thanks for taking us on student trips in to Harvard to the Reischauer center, and for introducing us - quite ahead of most schools at the time -- to Asian history in the most tactile and humanist interactive ways. Thanks Dana Hall, huge thanks Mr. Schuler.

To Dwin and Phyllis and John's whole family - Honestly, I think I just assumed John was going to live forever. Someone with that generosity of spirit, huge heart, enormous laugh, and love of life - it seemed he would be with us always. John was a great teacher and a major influence on my life. My family grew to love him, too, when he and Dwin visited us in Atlanta. A history class with John was the greatest start any journalist could ever have. My fond (and funny) memories of sitting with him in that house in Needham where we published the Hallmanac will stay with me forever. He taught me to go, go, go with enthusiasm and vigor no matter what the setting. We love you, Mr. Schuler, and may your memory be a blessing.

I met John when he was a very young history teacher at Dana Hall. I graduated in 1964. How surprised was I when I started coming to the Hills Church and saw him again after many years. His wonderful voice made him recognizable immediately. Since then I have watched John and Dwin do remarkable and inspiring service for the Church and the wider community. To have continued to be so active in such a long life of giving is truly to be admired. And I am very sad at his passing, for his beloved wife and family and I will miss his readings and his reliable presence in his favorite pew.

I have vivid memories of sitting in Mr. Schuler´s American History classes on the second floor of Dana Hall´s main building. I can still recall his enthusiasm, unedited laugh, big smile and care as he ushered young women around the world of history and learning. What a treasure.

Mr Schuler was my advisor at Dana Hall my first year in 1981. He made me feel welcome and took away any fear I had of starting a new school. He was a great man, and will be missed. My condolences to Phyllis and the rest of the family.

I have s many rich memories of times with Mr Schuler. Beginning as a student of Far Eastern history at Dana, where he inspired me to become a history major in college , up through many years at the Wellesley Hills Congressional Church. He will be a great loss to our church community, as well as every organization he was part of in Wellesley... and a personal loss for me.

I never had John Schuyler as a teacher (my loss), but one couldn´t help but know him. His presence was felt throughout the Dana community. I was incredibly flattered that he recognized and knew me at Reunions; but he was so invested in Dana that none of us were strangers to him. What a man.

You lit up my life when I was a boarder at Dana from 1973-1975. Though my heart has broken in a million ways, the memories of you ... and Mr Spencer together ... The Dynamic Duo Forever ... fill my soul. You two were inspirational to my education and future in ways that were unimaginable then.
To your family, I wholeheartedly understand how impactful this is for you. I understand because I know this pain. My heart hurts with yours.
When the grief lifts, I guarantee you will have a treasure of wonderful memories.

Mr. Schuler held steadfastly as my number 1 teacher and mentor and will always be. I came to Dana Hall in 11th grade and knew no one. Mr. Schuler instilled in all of us his passion for history and facts, but he also role modeled virtues. He was always so devoted to and grateful to his wife Dwin and his family. He always walked or biked everywhere. He enjoyed fine oration with his feet up on his desk and his chair tilted back precariously. He would come to the weekly faculty dinners w students in the dining hall and be thrilled about Boston Cream pie. He always seemed to project to us that life was a great adventure to be lived and we should not shirk from the challange. He also advised us on the school paper and encouraged me to ride into Boston on the T and volunteer on Mayor White´s reelection campaign. He took us to NH to participate in a mock nominating convention. He was always supportive while wanting us to do our best. I can still hear him teaching me the proper pronunciation of Wooster in the Battle of Wooster. My condolences to the family. A life very well lived and grateful to have known him! Mr. Schuler was my history teacher at Dana (I was Class of `73). We never knew what to expect in his class except his kind, smiling face and unique laugh. I will never forget the flags representing the United Nations he set up in the pond requiring us to do various "strategic exercises and negotiations". I am still questioning what it was all about. Luckily, I was able to have him answer some questions for me at our 50th reunion this year! He will be missed!
