John Schulstad, 87, of Willmar, died Thursday, December 27th at his home. His memorial will be at a later date with interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson & Johnson Funeral Home in Willmar, www.hafh.org
John Christian Schulstad was born August 15, 1937, in Mahnomen, the son of Christian and Violet (Lindell) Schulstad. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In 1937, he moved with his family to Northwood, ND, where he attended his schooling, graduating from Northwood High School in 1955. Following high school, John attended Concordia College in Moorhead, and graduated in 1959 with a degree in French.
On July 10, 1960, John was united in marriage to Janice Strom at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson. John joined the US Air Force, serving from 1960-1966. While in the service, John was a navigator bombardier on B-52 aircraft. Following his honorable discharge, John's job with the US Department of Agriculture, Forestry Service, and US Postal service took the family to several areas of the country: Texas, California, North Dakota, Colorado, Illinois, Virginia, and Montana, before retiring and settling in Willmar in 2010.
John enjoyed his hobbies of Ham Radio, flight simulation, kayaking, sailing, playing piano and piano tuning.
Surviving is his wife, Janice; son, Doug (Kathy) Schulstad of Montrose; daughter, Carol A. (Annie) Schulstad (Mo Smith) of Vadnais Heights; grandchildren, Molly (Mike) Hajenga, Jack Schulstad; and great-grandson, Archer Hajenga. Also surviving are his step-grandchildren: Alan (Pamela) Smith; Laura (Colin) Burke, and step-great grandchildren: Charlie and Daisy Burke and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Violet Schulstad
