John Joseph Sherry, known lovingly to his family as "Papa," passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, in
Modesto, California, at the age of 90. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, businessman, and community servant, John lived a life defined by hard work, dedication to family, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.
Born in
San Francisco, California on June 3, 1935, John grew up with a strong sense of pride in his Maltese heritage. On June 3, 1961, his 26th birthday, he married the love of his life, Joan Carolyn Lofgren, beginning a marriage that would span more than 64 years. Together, they built a family and a life centered on faith, hard work, and community.
John was a talented photographer and successful businessman. He ran his own photography business before serving as general manager of Brooks Camera in San Francisco. For nearly three decades, he owned Sherry's Broadway Camera in Millbrae, where he became a trusted fixture in the community. His expertise behind the lens and behind the counter touched countless lives.
A man of remarkable vision and skill, John designed his family's home in Millbrae himself. He also designed and physically built a country home in Grizzly Flats, California, over a period of years, a labor of love that showcased his craftsmanship and dedication.
John was a lifelong soccer player and coach who shared his passion for the beautiful game with generations of young athletes. His contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the Soccer Old Timers Association of California Hall of Fame memorializing his lasting impact on the soccer community.
John's commitment to service extended far beyond his family and career. As a United States Army veteran, he served his country with honor in the Spearhead 3rd Armored Division, stationed in Germany. He was proud of his Maltese heritage and served as president of the Maltese American Family Club in San Bruno, California. As a lifetime member of Lions International, John served as President and Lion of the Year for the Millbrae Lions Club and was also a member of the Folsom City Host Lions Club. For many years, he dedicated himself to raising money for various charities through collecting eyeglasses and organizing paper drives, embodying the Lions' mission of service above self.
Even in retirement, John's drive to serve never wavered. He worked for the City of Folsom Parks and Recreation Department for 22 years, becoming one of the longest-serving employees in the city's history. In 2022, he was recognized with a Resolution of Commendation by the mayor. Only the COVID-19 pandemic finally brought his remarkable tenure to a close.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Genevieve Sherry Tonna, his father, Joseph John Sherry, and sisters Maryann Konton (George), and Virginia Bussutil (Dominic).
John is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Joan Sherry; his daughter Nancy Butera (Dominic); his sons Joseph Sherry (Deborah) and Christopher Sherry (Sheryl); eight cherished grandchildren: Alexander Sherry (Larissa), Vincent Butera, Danielle Kneidl (Steven), Joseph Sherry, Christina Romano (John), Nicholas Butera, Christopher Sherry, and Andrea Sherry; and six precious great-grandchildren: John Kneidl, Elizabeth Kneidl, Benjamin Kneidl, Everett Kneidl, Gabriella Kneidl, and Giovanni Romano.
Papa's legacy is one of love, service, and dedication. Whether he was coaching a young soccer player, serving his community through Lions Club, building a home with his own hands, or simply being present for his family, he approached life with integrity, warmth, and an enduring commitment to making the world a better place. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched.
