John Jackson Shuler

John Jackson Shuler, affectionately known as "Jack," passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, in Haywood County, North Carolina. He was born on July 21, 1935, in Macon County, North Carolina. Jack lived a fulfilling life, leaving behind a legacy filled with remarkable accomplishments and cherished memories.

 

Jack dedicated an impressive 45 years of his professional career to Champion International before retiring. His commitment and loyalty to the company were unparalleled. Throughout his working years, Jack displayed unwavering dedication and contributed significantly to the organization's success.

 

After retiring, Jack embraced his passion for farming and never shyed away from engaging with people he met along the way. He had a natural ability to strike up conversations and effortlessly connect with strangers. His vibrant personality and genuine interest in others made him well-loved by all who knew him.

 

In his leisure time, Jack embarked on countless cross-country trips that allowed him to explore the diverse beauty of our nation. He particularly enjoyed visiting Edisto Beach and the Outer Banks, where he found solace in the tranquility of the ocean waves. Fishing trips with his buddies were always a highlight for Jack, as he cherished those precious moments spent with dear friends. Whether it was at the campground or elsewhere, Jack made it his mission to know every person he crossed paths with.

 

Jack's faith played an integral role in his life. He was an esteemed member of Canton First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. His commitment went beyond mere attendance; he actively participated in various church committees such as Building and Grounds, Finance, Steeple Replacement, Disaster Relief, and Missions projects. Jack's unwavering dedication to his church community exemplified his strong belief in serving others.

 

Furthermore, Jack held the esteemed title of Master of the Masonic Lodge 453—an honor that spoke volumes about his character and leadership abilities within this esteemed brotherhood.

 

Jack was preceded in death by his loving parents, Joe and Maime Smith Shuler. Despite the loss of his parents, Jack was blessed with a loving family who will forever hold him dear in their hearts. He is survived by his adoring wife of 63 years, Barbara P. Shuler, who brought joy and companionship into his life. Jack's two daughters, Camelle S. Blake and Carol S. Wemyss, and their respective husbands, Bruce A. Blake and Eric Wemyss, were a constant source of pride for him.

Jack also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren: Hollie Reid, Mariah Reid, Adddison Wemyss, Dillon Wemyss, and his wife Karlie. These grandchildren were the apple of his eye and he showered them with love and affection at every opportunity. His two great-grandchildren, Emerson and Everett, brought immense joy into his life—their laughter filling him with warmth and happiness.  Jack is also survived by two sisters: Bobbie Jo Amos (Larue), and Carolyn Osborne; and one brother, Harry Shuler.

 

On Monday, February 5, 2024, we will gather to remember Jack and celebrate the remarkable life he lived. The visitation will take place at Wells Funeral Home in Canton, North Carolina from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde following the visitation with the Reverend Ray Shepard.

 

Throughout his journey in life, Jack touched numerous lives with his kind heart and infectious spirit. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered as a devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, loyal friend, dedicated church member, accomplished professional, and a beacon of light within every community he graced.

 

Though Jack has left this earthly realm, his memory will forever reside within the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing that his life made a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
