John James Shushereba, Jr.

John J. Shushereba Jr., beloved brother, father, grandfather, friend, and esteemed professional, peacefully departed from this world on April 13, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. He was 70 years old.

John entered this world on January 5, 1954, in Youngstown, Ohio, to parents John J. Shushereba Sr. and Phyllis C. Shushereba. From the outset, he committed himself to excellence and passionately pursued discovery that defined his life’s path.

 His sharp intellect was evident during his years at Warren G. Harding High School, where he was an accelerated student, member of the National Honor Society, and received a Certificate of Merit. Upon graduating in 1972, he pursued his passion for biology and chemistry at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. It was during this period that his curiosity led him to join a cancer research team at the Case Western Reserve Medical School, where he dedicated himself to the study of pancreatic cancer and the effects of specific carcinogens.

 In 1975, John decided to pursue a new direction in engineering, leading him to enroll at Youngstown State University in Ohio. There, he earned his Bachelor of Engineering in electrical engineering and embarked on his professional journey at IBM. Climbing the ranks to become a senior electrical engineer, John’s contributions to the field were nothing short of extraordinary. His innovative personality and tireless work ethic led to the development of multiple patents.

 For John, his profession wasn’t just a means to earn a living; it was a realm of opportunity and productivity. Over the span of 31 years, he undertook numerous endeavors, both domestically and internationally, from Japan to Germany. Yet, amidst his achievements and adventures in the professional sphere, one thing remained constant: his dedication to his work. Even in his final coherent response to the question, “Where do you work, John?” his answer was always swift and resolute: “IBM”

Beyond his professional accomplishments, John’s legacy is defined by the love he shared with his family and friends. His wisdom, care, and kindness will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories, survived by his daughter, Kara Collier, and her spouse, Andrew; his son, John J. Shushereba III, and his spouse, Caley; and his adopted daughter, Shanna Shushereba. He was a treasured brother to Debra Cafferty and her spouse, Tom. His grandchildren, Peyton, Hadley, Kinley, and Remi Collier; Charley and Lucy Shushereba; and Kali and Phillip Shushereba, were the light of his life, each embodying a piece of his warmth and generosity.

 As we honor his memory, let’s also praise the unforgettable legacy of a man whose life was defined by purpose and boundless love. John imparted invaluable lessons on embracing passion and finding delight in life’s simple pleasures, from reveling in the wonders of nature and animals to cherishing companionship of all kinds. He loved hockey and enjoyed many years at the rink with his kids. John found joy skiing on the lake boating and swimming, golfing with friends and being by the ocean with family. Forever curious, he picked up woodworking and became skilled at creating gifts to share with family and friends.

Amidst his most challenging moments, he showed us how to summon laughter and treasure each moment with gratitude. His spirit will forever ignite our hearts, urging us to live authentically and savor the profound beauty that surrounds us.

A visitation will be held on Saturday,  April 20th,2024 from 9:30AM-10:30AM at Holy Family Church in Essex VT. A Funeral Mass will follow beginning at 10:30AM.
