Muncie – John F. Smedinghoff, 69, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023.
He was born in Greenville, Ohio on December 14, 1953, the son of George W. and Aline R. (Harvey) Smedinghoff and graduated from Greenville High School. John went on to receive his degree in Electrical Engineering from The University of Dayton and later received his Masters degree.
He worked for Motorola in Chicago for several years and played an integral part in developing the first cellular telephone. He later worked for RCA in Indianapolis before finally teaching Computer Science and Mathematics at Ivy Tech.
John loved baseball and watching sports on television. He also enjoyed electronics throughout his life. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where he served as head Usher.
Survivors include his sister, Rosanne North; sister-in-law, Sandra Smedinghoff; nephew, Mark Smedinghoff; niece, Kimberly Smedinghoff; also surviving are an aunt and uncle along with several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother, George Gerard Smedinghoff; brother-in-law, James D. North; and his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 13, 2023 in St. Mary Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with Father Eric Underwood presiding. A private burial will take place in St. Mary Cemetery, Richmond, Indiana.
Family and friends may call from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary Catholic Church, 2300 West Jackson Street, Muncie, Indiana 47303.

I was a former Adjunct Math Teacher at Ivy Tech and met John there. He was very helpful to make the education process for students easier. my sympathies to his family and friends
