John James Smith, age 94, of Lowell, Michigan passed away peacefully and unexpected on Sunday May 18, 2025 at home with loved ones.
John was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 9, 1931 the son of Joseph and Gertrude Smith. John married the love of his life Mary Brown on June 8, 1957. A wonderful marriage for 47 years until Mary's passing. He was preceded in death by 6 siblings, wife Mary Smith (Brown) and daughter Lisa Smith Verastegui.
John is survived by his children John D. Smith (Kay), Dana Smith, Joseph Smith (Vika), Valerie Young (Shane), grandchildren Mary Smith (Nick), Travis Verastegui, Veronica Smith and great grandchildren Naomi Smith, Adrianna Smith, Detroit Ceal and Solomon Reid.
John had 3 honorable discharge certificates, 1 from the Army serving in the Korean War and 2 from the Navy where he retired as a Master Chief. He was also a Diesel Instructor at Ferris State University and Michigan Technological University.
He had a very kind heart and received a gold pin for donating 10 gallons of blood. He will be missed dearly. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. For those who wish, memorials may be made to:
