John L. Spanky DeJaynes

John Leroy DeJaynes, of Abingdon, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on November 6 th, 2025 at 5:30 a.m. Born on April 21 st, 1963, John was a proud lifelong resident of Abingdon who touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. In high school, he met the love of his life Shawn Onion and later married on September 26 th, 1987.
John worked for many years at Briggs Pottery where he made many of his lifelong friends. Later, John became co-owner of Abingdon Business Solutions, where his hard work, sense of humor, and dedication made a lasting impression. John served as both mayor and as a member of city council for the town of Abingdon.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shawn DeJaynes; his daughter Courtney Warner(Jake) and son John Jacob DeJaynes (Jordan). He also leaves behind his beloved "grand-dogs", Lou, Benji, and Amara, along with his loyal sidekick, Cooper, who never left his side. He is also survived by his brothers Michael DeJaynes(Aine), Keith DeJaynes(Dixie), Danny DeJaynes(Ronda), and Kevin DeJaynes, as well as his many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
John was proceeded in death by his parents, Russell and Barb DeJaynes as well as his mother-in-law Bev Onion.
Most of his friends and loved ones referred to him as "Spanky DeJaynes", often not knowing his true name. John was an avid outdoorsman, homesteader, and storyteller known for his quick wit, generous heart, and ability to make everyone laugh. He was truly the life of the party, and his warmth and humor will continue to echo through the stories and memories he leaves behind.
John's legacy lives on in the love of his family, the laughter he inspired, and the countless lives he brightened along the way.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held from Noon - 4:00 PM, Saturday, November 29, 2025 at Stubbys Bar, Abingdon. A private burial of cremated remains will be held at a later date. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory, Knoxville are assisting the family with arrangements.
