John William Sperry, 84, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
John was the devoted husband of Sandra L. (Bouchie) Sperry for over 60 years, and together they built a beautiful life filled with family, faith, and community. He is survived by his wife Sandra and their four children: John E. Sperry and his wife Jennifer Ekborg Sperry, James M. Sperry and his wife Nancy Connolly Sperry, Mary Beth (Sperry) Quinn and her husband David Quinn, and Jason A. Sperry and his wife Penny Fulford Sperry, all of Gloucester. He was the proud grandfather of twelve grandchildren - Isaac Sperry, Hannah Sperry, Meaghan Quinn Collette, Kacie Quinn, Michelle Quinn, Lauren Sperry Willingham, Jack Sperry, Jakob Sperry, Emma Sperry, Max Sperry, Maggie Sperry, and Albenie (Ben) Sperry and he was a great-grandfather to Nora Collette, KJ Willingham, Maeve Willingham, and Sadie Collette all who brought him endless joy.
A lifelong educator, John dedicated over 35 years to the Gloucester Public Schools as a teacher and head of the Mathematics Department. After retiring, he continued to share his love of learning by teaching math at St. Ann's School for several years. His patience, humor, and commitment to his students left a lasting mark on generations of young people.
Beyond the classroom, John was deeply involved in his community. He was a longtime member of the Gloucester Elks, where he served as treasurer for many years, and a member of the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Good Voyage Church.
Above all, John cherished time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His kindness, gentle wit, and steady presence will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.
John was predeceased by his mother, Helen Enos Taber; his grandmother, Mary Enos; and his brother, Gary Taber of Rockport.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, Gloucester.
