John Sponheimer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Trahan Family Funeral Home - Pensacola on Mar. 26, 2023.
John (Jon) William Sponheimer
September 9, 1933 - March 20,2023
2 Timothy 4:7
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Jon William Sponheimer, 89, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 20,2023. As was his wish, he
passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving wife. He was preceded in death by his
father, John Sponheimer, and his mother, Ellamay Sequist Sponheimer, both of Essex, MD. He leaves
behind his wife of 48 years, Deborah Sponheimer; his son, Kevin Sponheimer; daughter, Jennifer
Sponheimer Tessier; and his grandchildren, Megan Tessier, Allison Sponheimer, and Sean Sponheimer.
Jon spent his early life growing up with his mother and father in Baltimore, MD on a farm. Their home
was originally a Stagecoach Inn that was still being used as the voting precinct. His mother passed
when he was just 12 years old, and Jon was then raised by his Grandmother. He joined the Marine
Corps in 1950 at the age of 17. He served his country during the Korean War as a Frozen Chosin,
receiving a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.
Jon lived in England and Spain, and later attended Georgia Tech, in Atlanta, where he met his wife
Deborah in 1975. He would later live and work as a contractor in the Middle East for many years.
Jon enjoyed spending time with his family and many dear friends. He was happy being on the water
boating, crabbing, and camping. He also enjoyed golf, music, and telling a good tale. Earlier interests
were backgammon, darts, and racing greyhounds with his son in England. He had a passion for travel.
He and his wife Deborah visited over 25 countries together and filled their home with treasures from all
over the world.
A special thank you to his friends, family, congregation, and brothers who visited and lent their
support to Jon and his family in his final years.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, April 7th at The Point Church, 13801 Innerarity Point Rd. Pensacola, FL 32507.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until the time of the service at 12:30 PM, Inurnment will take place at 1:30 PM at Barrancas National Cemetery.
A reception will immediately follow at 2:30 pm at The Point Church
