John Raymond Sterba, 71, of Miners-Mills, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, while in the comforting care of Allied Services Hospice Center in Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Wilkes-Barre on Dec. 6, 1954, John was one of three children to the late John and Ann Marie Andes Sterba. He spent his formative years in the Miners-Mills section of the city, attending Sacred Heart, Wilkes-Barre. John graduated with the class of 1972 from James M. Coughlin High School, where he was a dedicated member of the football team. Following high school, he furthered his education at Penn State.
On Sept. 13, 1975, John married Janet Blakeslee. The couple first resided in Wyoming, then in Parsons, and ultimately settled back in Miners-Mills, which became their lifelong home. Together, John and Janet raised two children: John Jr. and Tanya.
John was recognized for his strong work ethic as a lifelong construction laborer. His career spanned various roles in the industry, including building, demolishing structures, and pool installations — showcasing his comprehensive knowledge of construction sites. He was employed by several firms over the years, such as Lombardo's Construction, Dunbar's Construction Management, and Intermetro.
In his spare time, John enjoyed black powder shooting and regularly took part in the Civil War Shooting Competition at Fort Shenandoah, Virginia. As an avid outdoorsman, he found joy in hunting and fishing, leading him to join the Miners-Mills hunting and shooting club. John was also active in several local organizations, including the Polish American Veterans (PAV), the Polish American Organization, the Triangle Club, and the Italian Club. He participated in the dart league and loved cheering for the Vikings and watching NASCAR.
John is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Janet; son, John Jr., Plains Township; daughter, Tanya Kores and her spouse, Benjamin, Cheshire, Conn.; grandchildren, Keira, Declan, Sean, Abigail, and Nathan; sister, Linda Maloney, and her spouse, Thomas, Miners-Mills; brother, David, and his spouse Leah, Plains Township; nephews, Tyler, Bear Creek, and David, Delaware; and his faithful dog, Lily.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, in Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m., officiated by the Rev. John C. Lambert, pastor. Interment with the Rite of Committal, officiated by John's cousin, the Rev. Eric Arnout, will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
Arrangements are under the care of Yanaitis Funeral Home Inc., Plains Twp.

So very sorry for your loss Janet and your family. I met John & Janet in 1985 at the Cracker Jack when I joined the dart league. Over the years I would see Stretch out and each time John was humble funny full of life. May you conquer the dart board up above my friend
