John (Jack) Lance Stevens of
Crossville, TN, passed away on March 14, 2026, at the age of 82. Born in Chicago on June 12, 1943, to Walter and Stella (Stirpakus) Stevens, he grew up on the South Side as one of five brothers. After earning his bachelor's degree from Beloit College, he went on to build a successful career in the insurance industry, eventually rising to become the President of a re-insurance company. In retirement, Jack enjoyed traveling with his long-time partner and love, Linda Swanson. The two eventually moved to Tennessee, customizing a home where they delighted in hosting friends and relatives.
Jack had a wide range of passions. Taking up golfing as a child, he once played 54 holes in a single day on the course. He was fond of horses and owned racehorses, his favorite being "GoSox." With an analytical mind, he would scrutinize the betting markets, drawn to the balance of information, probability, and chance. Using the same logical approach, he taught several of his nieces/nephews and following generations how to play poker (to win!), leading to many games at family gatherings where he often covered more than one person's buy-in.
Jack loved his large extended family, and he found countless ways to support his multi-generational nieces and nephews. Whether babysitting the first generation, attending school soccer and hockey games for the second generation, or welcoming new spouses to the family, he was always present and took a genuine interest in the lives of each person. He provided meaningful conversations about growing up and navigating life decisions. At the same time, he offered good humor and the quiet grace of a gentleman – even when ice fishing in dress shoes and slacks. He taught young family members about the finer things in life, from White Castles to convertibles such as his legendary 1967 Austin-Healey. Some referred to him as the "James Bond" uncle, as he maintained a private peace that exuded an air of mystery.
Even while following his personal pursuits, Jack gave of his time intentionally. He attended every family gathering regardless of distance – from Thanksgiving shrimp boils with Linda's family on the East Coast to Christmas in St. Charles, IL, where he brought a "surprise" envelope for each niece/nephew. Everything Jack did was thoroughly thought out, with each meticulous detail reflecting his love. He was generous in both time and resources, and he prioritized opportunities to celebrate with loved ones. Most recently, he hosted an Oktoberfest Party with costumes, a live band, food, beer, singing, and dancing, creating a monumental evening of joy and laughter.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents, brother Walter and sister-in-law Patricia Stevens, and brother David Stevens. He is survived by his partner, Linda Swanson, sister-in-law Connie, brothers James (spouse Jeanette) and Gregory (spouse Diane), 18 nieces/nephews, 28 great-nieces/nephews, and 9 great-great-nieces/nephews. The abundant warmth and generosity Jack consistently exuded throughout his life will continue to inspire them.
There will be a small, private ceremony at Historic Spring Hill Cemetery for immediate family, followed by a memorial gathering this summer with a caliber of celebration seeking to honor Jack's legacy and make him proud.
