Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rose Funeral & Cremation - Mann on Feb. 20, 2026.
With full hearts and grateful memories, we share the passing of John Hubert Stone, who completed his journey at the age of 84. While we feel the weight of his absence, anyone who knew John understands he would strongly prefer we also feel the laughter-and probably tell a good story while we're at it.
Born in
Racine, Wisconsin, John lived a life defined not by titles, though he held many - son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend - but by presence. He had a way of making people feel steadier simply by standing next to them, and more hopeful simply by talking with them.
Adventure was never optional for John. He loved sailing, travel, and discovering what was just beyond the horizon - whether that horizon was across an ocean or across the street with a neighbor who needed help. He worked hard, took pride in what he built, and believed happiness wasn't something you chased, but something you practiced daily.
Retirement didn't slow him down; it clarified him. Side by side with his beloved wife Joan, he devoted himself to service and faith at The Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. As a Eucharistic Minister, he brought Communion - and conversation - to nursing home residents who soon expected not just the sacrament, but the visit. With his son Matthew, he joined the Knights of Columbus to support and educate the community. He served on the Sertoma Board of Directors, helping shape a sustainable future for their mission. And among the works closest to his heart was helping launch the medical clinic through the Haiti Outreach Program - a legacy measured not in buildings, but in lives cared for.
John is survived by his wife Joan; daughters Christina and Jennifer; son Matthew; grandson Cameron; and sister Pam - along with many extended family members, friends, parishioners, and neighbors who were quietly adopted along the way.
A private celebration of John's life will be held February 24th at The Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Haiti Outreach Program - a cause John would gently insist mattered far more than bouquets.
John will be deeply missed. But his humor, steady kindness, and adventurous spirit remain - in the stories we tell, the service we offer, and the moments when we choose to help someone simply because it's the right thing to do.
And if he had the last word, it would probably be: "Take care of each other... and don't forget to enjoy the trip."
