John A. Stonis, 29, of Hampton, VA, formerly of Mt. Prospect, IL passed away January 17, 2024. He was the beloved husband of LaTonya Crowder; loving son of Paul and Mary (nee Powers) Stonis; cherished brother of Kathryn (Ryan) Witzke and Marilee Stonis; adored grandson of Thomas (Gail) Powers, the late Marilee Powers, Dorothy Stonis and the late John Stonis; fond son-in-law of LaTonya Montgomery and Earnest Crowder; brother-in-law of Taneasha Hill, Marquita Crowder, and Patricia Crowder and cherished nephew and cousin to many.
John met his wife, LaTonya, in Navy Nuclear Power School in 2020 and they married January 6, 2023. Together they loved antiques and visiting museums. John entered the Navy in 2019. He was an Electronic Technician Nuclear Field Second Class Petty Officer and was attached with the USS Montana submarine where he earned his dolphins, the USS Oklahoma and the USS New Jersey where he assisted with critical missions for sea trials.
John started flying planes at the age of 14 and received his private pilot's license – he loved flying and attending air shows. John was quick witted and loved a good pun. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

John started volunteering here at the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum, (aka Air Zoo), in 2016. I was his supervisor at the time. I can say with 100% certainty that he was one of the most kind souls I have ever met in my life. Extremely intelligent, he had a gentle nature about him, and was always humble. His outstanding sense of humor was non-stop and it was always accompanied by a smile. John's love for airplanes was driven by a real passion for aviation. Everyone who worked with John could always be seen laughing and smiling. When he moved back to Illinois he was sorely missed. I'll attach a few pictures at the end of this thread. I will be praying for his remaining friends and family members. Without a doubt, we'll meet up again some day! REST IN PEACE JOHN!
