Born in Bakersfield, CA, on May 23, 1946, to Ishmael Glenn Summers and Dorothy Edith Spencer, Gary was a lifelong resident of Taft. He was a proud graduate of Taft High School (1964) and attended Taft College before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Beyond his career, Gary's commitment to Taft was unwavering. He dedicated his time to the community through service on the Taft Fort Board, the Petroleum Club and the Westside Cemetery District Board. A proud veteran, he was also the Commander of American Legion Post 63, for over 20 years he helped bring the American Legion in Taft back to life, devoting over 10 years of that time to being the Commander of American Legion Post 63.
Gary was a loving husband and father. He and his first wife, Vickie Hall, shared 12 years and raised two children, Shaun and Erin. In 2023, he found joy and companionship when he married Sue Melton. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Ishmael and Dorothy, his brother William (Bill) Summers, and his beloved grandson Johnathan Summers.
