John Thomas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Washburn-McReavy Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell Shoreview Funeral Chapel on Dec. 16, 2025.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Gerald Thomas of Shoreview, Minnesota on Thursday, December 11, 2025. John was an exceptionally kind, generous, and intelligent man who will be fondly remembered by the countless number of people he touched throughout his 81-year journey on this earth. He was a loving husband, a caring father, a doting grandfather, and a dear friend.

John led an exemplary life, graduating with a bachelor's degree from Saint John's University and a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. He served in the United States Army for five years, most notably as a lieutenant provost marshal in Waegwan, South Korea. He had an exceptional career spanning three decades at the Minnesota Department of Corrections working as a case worker, a program director, and an associate warden. He was a true intellectual, an engaging conversationalist, a voracious reader, and a talented writer. He loved going for long walks, complimenting strangers, and spoiling his grandchildren.

But John's true legacy was his incredible warmth and boundless generosity. His disarming sense of humor and genuine concern made all who knew him feel valued and loved. He was always willing to lend help when needed and showed kindness toward loved ones and strangers alike. He was a paragon of kind-heartedness, an example for us all. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

John is survived by his wife Peggy, his brother Mike (Eileen), his sister-in-law Michele, his children Chris, Paul (Katie), Janet (Frank), and David (Charista), his grandchildren Dylan, Ethan, Mia, Abigail, Marc, Jude, Luke, Gray, and Isaac, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandniece, cousins, and dear family friends all of whom loved him very much. He is preceded in death by his parents Duke and Rosie, his brother Bob, and his sister Linda.

A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held in the coming spring. Details will be made available once a date and venue are set.
