John David Toms, 53, of Bedford passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA. He was born on July 6, 1971. A son of James Lee Toms and Karen Lewis Zimmerman Toms. John was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Cabell L. Zimmerman and Virginia Hogan Zimmerman and his Paternal Grandparents, James Bernard Toms and Mae Key Toms. In addition to his grandparents John was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Adley Toms and his Father-in-laws, Cecil B. Ruff and Arvid Pederson.
John was the owner operator of Toms Heating and Air for 35 years. He was a hard worker, a mentor to so many and a leader who took great pride in his work with his clients. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandkids. John enjoyed the outdoors while hunting, fishing, gardening and watching any sporting events with UVA Cavaliers or the Miami Dolphins and anything classic cars and trucks especially his 1969 C10 pickup. He was loved dearly by each of his family and will be missed in the days ahead.
In addition to his parents John was survived by his loving wife, Sonya Helen Toms, four children, Hunter Toms (Farrah), Lane Toms (Jozie Thomas), Cassidy Ruff and Bradley Earle Toms; six grandchildren, Colton, Brynley, Waylon, Haven, Tucker and Baby Toms on the way; Sister, Jacqueline Toms Leonard. Brother-in-laws, Marty Ruff and Ben Ruff (Tiny); Sister-in-law, Sheree Byers (Brian); Mother-in-law, Patricia Pederson; his special four-legged friends his two cats, Willow and Hank and his shop dog, Jake. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and so many friends.

A funeral service and celebration of John’s life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford.
