May 13, 1927, to November 25, 2025

John "Jack" Andrew Townsley passed away peacefully on November 25, 2025, at the age of 98. He was born at Saint Mary's Hospital in San Francisco to loving parents Helen and John Townsley, and grew up in Larkspur Canyon, Marin County, California. Jack attended Neil Cummins School and Tamalpais High School, building memories that lasted a lifetime. In 1945, he enlisted in the Navy and served in Hawaii. Following his service, he attended and graduated from the University of the Pacific. Jack's career was marked by a series of inspiring achievements and roles that showcased his dedication and leadership. During the summers, he supervised Forest Service firefighters. As a passionate history teacher and principal in Patterson, he also loved sharing his knowledge of history with students in Mill Valley and Kentfield, inspiring many and earning their admiration. After his teaching days, he moved on to become the N Cal CTA Bay Area Director. In 1971, Jack joined the Sierra Club as Chief Administrative Officer under President Raymond Sherwin. A highlight was creating the Sierra Club's production of "Wild Places," starring Paul Newman and directed by Lee Mendelson. After a brief period at the EPA in San Francisco, he founded JA Townsley Co. in 1989, where he dedicated himself as an environmental consultant, specializing in asbestos and lead removal in schools. Jack's hardworking spirit kept him active in his work until he was 85, inspiring everyone he met.

Jack was known for his strong opinions and loved sharing advice with family and friends. While some appreciated his guidance, others thought it was a bit much at times. He enjoyed exploring the western US and often organized trips for friends and family to visit his favorite states, parks, and towns. His favorite travels included climbing Delicate Arch in Utah, celebrating Christmas in Santa Fe, hiking to Townsley Lake in Yosemite, and sailing through the Panama Canal.

Jack is survived by his wife, Catherine, son John III (Lisa), daughter Terri (Mark), grandchildren John IV (Tricia), Ashley, Mallory (Marcelino), Paige, Nicole (Jordan), and great-grandchildren Bella, Haylie, Cassidy, Elizabeth, Breslin, Evan, Brooke, and Emily. His family and friends cherish our wonderful memories, and he will live on in our hearts.
