John Tranum Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McMillan-Small Funeral Home & Crematory on Sep. 29, 2024.
John would like to let you know that his work here is done. He received a call, a sort of an offer you can't refuse, for an appointment from which he will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus, a reunion with family and friends he has not seen in a long time. Job security is exactly 110 percent. His new mission takes him to a wonderful place where he will be socializing and riding his Harley Davidson to his heart's content. Music, laughter and love are guaranteed. Food is delicious and you never gain an ounce. At the age of 75 this offer was effective September 28, 2024 at the Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Born March 2, 1949 in Beryl/Keyser, West Virginia, he was the son of Calvin Sullivan Tranum and Bernadine Marie Hopkins Tranum Citarelli, grandson of John L. Sullivan Tranum and Mary Elizabeth Pritts Tranum and great-grandson of Burbridge Coleman Tranum and Martha Elizabeth McManus Tranum, all preceded him in death. He resided between Franklin and Barton, Maryland along George's Creek and Keyser, WV until being drafted into the US Army where he remained until retiring as a Sergeant Major after 21 years of service in 1988. He was a Vietnam Veteran having served two tours; one with the B Company 4 Engineer Battalion, 4th Infantry Division and the second tour with MACV Team 26 in Dalat. After military retirement, he worked for a large manufacturing company as a Human Resources Executive and retired after 23 years. Not ready for retirement he then worked for a few more companies for short durations.
Surviving is his wife of 54 wonderful and happy years, Vera Jeanette Jackson (Jenny) Tranum of Myrtle Beach, SC; four sons, John Calvin Tranum Jr. of Winchester, VA; Jeffry Allen Tranum of Keyser, WV; Scott Calvin Tranum and wife, Jocelyn Correll Tranum of Oak Ridge, NC; and Anderson Harold Tranum and wife, Ava Medlin Tranum of Lexington, SC.
Also surviving are six grandchildren, John Calvin Tranum Ill of Winchester, VA; Hannah Leigh Tranum of Keyser, WV; Andrew Tyler Tranum and Rachael Brooke Tranum of Lexington, SC; and Lauren Olivia Tranum and William "Will" Calvin Tranum of Oak Ridge, NC. He is also survived by two great-grandsons, Landon Ryan Stansberry of Keyser, WV and John Calvin Tranum, IV of Winchester, VA. John is also survived by his siblings; Della Avers (Jerry) of Mt. Joy, PA, Mary Bell of Mt. Joy, PA, Eileen Boaman (Tom) of Elizabethtown, PA and Charles Tranum of Orrtanna, PA. Brothers-in-Law Harold Dwaine Jackson (Lexington) and Tyler Jackson (Carolyn) (West Columbia) and numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a sister Sherry Ellen Tranum formerly of Keyser, WV and Winchester, VA.
A Memorial service will be conducted at the First Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach located at 901 N. Kings Hwy. Myrtle Beach, SC 29577 on Saturday, October 5th at 2:00 pm with Pastor Michelle Louk officiating. John will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. An update on when that is scheduled will be posted here once it is confirmed.

I so appreciated and enjoyed you coming to visit with me and sharing dinner and breakfast while I was up in Shenandoah Valley. I knew you to be such a calm and comforting presence. I proud that you were my cousin. See ya up there. Hug everyone for me.
