John Watkins Obituary
John William Watkins, age 88, of Greensboro passed away Sunday November 9, 2025.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday September 13, 2025, at Saint Paul Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
John Watkins was born September 8, 1937, in Richmond County to the late Henry and Anna Watkins. John was a proud member of Saint Paul Presbyterian Church. He graduated from N.C. State University and went on to work for the N.C. Department of Transportation Highway division as a division engineer. On November 1, 1999, he received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
Mr. Watkins is survived by his wife, Phyllis Watkins and special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Paul Presbyterian Church at 2300 Old Chapman St, Greensboro, NC 2740.
The family is being served by Forbis & Dick N. Elm Chapel.

Dearest Phyllis,
We are saddened to hear of John's passing. We still laugh when we think about him fertilizing your yard year-round and having to mow every week; although we enjoyed your yard and beautiful garden. I miss chatting frequently with you both.
And, I remember what fun we had with our annual Christmas ornament exchanges. I still hang those ornaments on our Christmas tree. We grieved with you when Julie became so sick. She fought the good fight and finished the race.

John Watkins was one of the most respected leaders for many years in the NCDOT. He declined the Chief Engineer position in Raleigh several times in order to look after his daughter in her final years. This showed the depth of this man´s character in placing family ahead of a prestigious position. He never looked for fortunes or fame but to remain in the background and allow someone else to receive the credit. He was a true servant to the citizens of North Carolina. I know God welcomed home a good and faithful servant.
