John Robert Weld, a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the age of 92.
He was born on April 20, 1933, in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma to Oliver Kelly Weld and Gladys Martin Weld. John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He earned his Bachelor of Science from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma and began his career as a Petroleum Engineer. He held various engineering and management duties in Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana over his 30+ year career with Gulf Oil and Chevron. John was one to invent something to improve advancements in his field and registered two patents during his career for the Corrosion Coupon Injector.
John’s love of family and faith in God were most important in his life. He was a faithful servant to the Lord and was always a helping hand to anyone who was in need. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church Baton Rouge. He and his wife Beverly spent much of their time at their church during their retirement years, including driving the church bus for those who needed transportation to get groceries, taking groups on retreats, and serving as an Elder.
During John’s years in West Texas, he wanted to learn to fly. He bought a small plane and completely rebuilt it, so he could fly across the amazing landscapes during many afternoons. He became reacquainted with flying in his later years by volunteering to fly with the Civil Air Patrol. He was able to fly many search and rescue missions across South Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 2005, where he was recognized by the Air Force for his service.
In addition to his love of flying and the many years of service to his church, John loved fishing, hunting, watching football games and most of all, spending time with his family. He was wise, clever, and always had a good sense of humor.
He will be forever missed by his family and many others.
John is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 68 years, Beverly Weld; his siblings, Kelly Weld, Doris Weld Brennar, Clairice Weld Tatton, and Elva Weld Wall; and his grandson, Anthony Lacombe.
He is survived by his daughters, Suzanne Weld Cambre and husband, Robert Daryl Cambre, and Michelle Weld Lacombe; his grandchild, John W. Cambre and wife, Amy Cambre; and his great-grandchildren, Eliza Cambre, Louisa Cambre, and Adelaide Cambre.
